So for instance you might choose to write about music. But if you want success and traffic you really need to come down to a lower level topic. So rather than tackle the whole subject of all music ever written and all associated elements, why not concentrate on a few elements? For instance you may choose to focus on something like the theory side of music, or perhaps composing. Or pick a genre like classical, jazz, pop and so on. And of course those can be sub-divided further too. Taking the time to drill down in a subject can really increase your chances of getting lots of traffic and building a popular site, which is really hard to do with a very generic site.
