How To Bring Another Cat Into Your Home

Pets : Cats

If you already have a cat and want another one, it is not feasible just to expect to throw them both together and they will become bosom buddies. First of all you should bring the new cat home and keep him in another room for the first week.

This way the old cat will become accustomed to the new scent which should make their first meeting less of a trial. Another method to introduce new scents to the original cat is to use an old towel or even a sock and rub the new cat down. This piece of material can then be left in the other cat's territory.

The original cat will inevitably be very defensive of his/her territory, so in order to ensure that he/she does not feel it is being taken over, make sure they both have separate litter boxes to begin with.

In addition, give them incentives to like each other by using treats and toys - this also distracts them.

Of course, when choosing your new cat you should try and find one with a personality that will complement that of the other, but really the most important thing is how you introduce them both.

Never be tempted to rush this initial phase by giving them too much time together too soon. Bring them together gradually and things should ultimately work out well.

We got a new cat three weeks ago and he is the only male cat in the house. The first time he was out of the room he got attacked by our two other cats which our female. So don't get any male cats with females around.

If your older cat doesn't accept kittens, try to find one that looks like him. It helped us.
