For instance, offer them some sort of free content that would be useful on their site, in exchange for a link. Many sites do this through offering an information feed of some sort. For instance, if you run a quotations site, you could offer a quote of the day service that anyone can include on their site for free, and ensure that the code they link to has your link to your site in it. This way you should both gain - they get good quality content that is updated automatically, and you get a link back to you, hopefully from a good quality site.
