First of course ensure that it is not coming from the boot and you have a heavy object or similar that has come loose or is knocking about! If it is definitely coming from the car, then the most likely cause of this heavy thumping noise is worn joints in the drive shaft. Clearly this is not a good sign and you should take the car along to the garage for a full check straight away.
