DIY : Building

Having been a Carpenter for many years, I have seen alot of changes within the trade some of which are not too clever, but on the other hand there are some very good ones worth a mention. Not least the vastly improved Health & Safety within the work place. I shudder even now when I think of the work practices that were adopted in the old days.( If you are old enough you will know what I mean ) Another point I would like too make is that these days most of what an carpenter needs is done for them somewhere in an joinery shop. Take stairs for example. These days you no longer make them on site. Just take the measurements, relay them to the joinery shop, get them delivered and fit them. I will say however it is extremely important too know how to build stairs. When I was teaching I encouraged my learners to build everything by hand, starting with simple joints right through to making stairs, casement windows, doors, box sash windows etc. So having said all that Has the game changed for the better? I would say its about 50-50.
