How To Choose A Pet Rabbit

Pets : Fish

Rabbits make great pets but should always be handled with care. Never let children play with them alone as they may lift the rabbit incorrectly or frighten it inadvertently and this can make the rabbit bite your child out of feelings of self-defence. But when cared for properly, rabbits thrive on human interaction.

It is common to keep rabbits outside in a hutch but this is not always the best option as they can be scared into a heart attack by predators, if not killed directly. Sometimes it is actually better to keep your rabbit inside the house, but this is not always possible.

If it is, choose a reasonably quiet, warm spot. Larger rabbits generally have a more docile nature than dwarf breeds but it is best to ask a pet specialist for advice when you are buying the rabbit as to what kind suits your family best.

Essential equipment is a food dish, water bottle or dish and litterbox. Grooming items are also necessary. Rabbits with long fur will probably need groomed on a daily basis to stop their fur from getting tangled.

You will also need a case to transport the rabbit home, and on any other occasions when it needs to travel, eg trips to the vet.

Make sure you are shown the correct way to lift the rabbit, and also advised on the type and amount of food you should give it.

If the rabbit is kept in the house you must make sure he or she is not allowed to roam the house unsupervised, as they can become trapped behind furniture or fall from shelves and injure themselves.

They also like to chew things - wires, rugs, shoes etc, so you must be careful. You can usually buy some kind of repellent spray from petshops which you can spray onto furniture and things at risk from being chewed.
