How To Choose A Pineapple

Food And Drink : Great Food Tips

You can tell whether a pineapple is edible by the smell and appearance of it. It should have good green leaves and look plump at the bottom. If it is bruised then avoid it. The smell should be sweet at the stem. When you touch the pineapple there should be no soft spots, there should only be a slight suppleness when you push but your fingers or thumb should not be able to puncture the skin.

When you want to cut a pineapple, the best way to do so is to remove the crown at the top by twisting it off, then slicing the pineapple into quarters lengthwise. Remove the shell from each quarter with the knife and take out the core from the top. From here you can slice these pieces into chunks. You can store the pineapple before cutting it for about 4 days, but once cut it will only last a few.

Sometimes you can make a nice presentation for a dessert by using the shell of a pineapple as a serving dish. To do so, don't remove the crown - just cut the pineapple in half once and carefully cut out the fruit from each half so that you are left with empty shells.
