How To Conduct An Exit Interview

Career : Interviews

An exit interview is where by the company finds out your motivation and reason for leaving.

Most HR departments will do this to establish any trends or patterns and see if there are any particular issues that the company needs to address above and beyond standard staff churn.

If you are conducting an exit interview, remember that you should try to stay dispassionate and understanding.

Some people even in HR get defensive about people leaving a company they care about and can therefore get too inquisitive.

Respect the reasons that you are given and record them accurately, do not try to push people into giving away more than they feel like giving.

Remember that the person is leaving the company and therefore the company loses its grip on that person - therefore to find out why a person really left you may need to be soft and sensitive in your questioning.
