How To Cope With A New Step Parent

Relationships : Family

If your mother or father has a new relationship, then at some stage you will meet the new partner.

And over time, sometimes sooner and sometimes later, they may well move in with you, meaning that you either have a new person around the house or a new step parent if they choose to get married.

The impact this has on you can be very big, and of course largely depends on the relationship you have with your parent and on the identity of the new person.

If things are strained and difficult at first then remember that this is natural, and give it time to get to know the new person and develop a liking and trust of them.

If you think they are unreasonable in their behaviour to you, then be sure to tell your parent and raise it as early as you can.

Should things not settle down after a while and your parent isn't listening, then speak to a teacher that you trust at school in confidence or Childline or other service for help, support and advice.
