How To Cope With An Embarrassing Parent

Relationships : Family

If you have an embarrassing parent, then it can be a real nightmare when your friends come round.

If your parents are either really strict or too friendly or just don't act their age, then you may want to keep your friends away from them.

However the best thing to do is to talk to your parents about it. My Mum used to dress what I thought was too young for her age but when I told her about that she toned it down a bit and now looks fine and it is fine to have my mates around her again.

Similarly what ever it is about your parents that is embarrassing you they probably don't realise it or know about it until you tell them, so just do it!

More parenting advice

Be honest and specific about behaviour that you find embarrassing, and instead of criticising their actions, suggest alternative things for them to say or do in a positive way. For example, tell your mother that a particular skirt looks nice and that your friends would think so too, rather than criticising the current outfit she is wearing.
