How To Cope With Long Plane Journeys

Travel : Travel Tips

If you are going on a long plane journey, the best thing you can do beforehand is prepare your hand luggage bag for the flight, as here you should put everything that you will want while flying. Essential materials are a book or 2, a newspaper, a magazine, bottled water, and some other activities to pass the time if you wish.

You should dress appropriately for your flight, ideally this means layers, as the cabin temperature can go from hot to cold very quickly, especially if the person next to you has their air conditioning vent switched on. So you are best to wear layers that can easily be added to or removed accordingly.

If you require certain food while flying, and are unable to eat the normal meals, perhaps because you are a vegetarian or have other dietary requirements, then you must say when you book the flight so as to avoid any hassles once the flight has begun. The staff cannot produce a special meal when they have not been given advance warning.

You might want to bring a long a personal CD player or other portable music player and a selection of music. This will help pass the time, especially if the in flight film is not to your taste. As well as this, you can bring any electronic games, or indeed the travel sized versions of old favourites like chess and backgammon if you are travelling with someone else who plays.

If you have some work to do, then take this opportunity to get on with it in peace. If you are taking a laptop computer with you, then you may have taken that onto the flight as well. But remember you will also have a lot of time for reading, so if you have notes or documents to read through, now is the time.

You must drink a lot of water while flying as dehydration can occur due to the atmosphere in the cabin. If you want, you can bring some snacks with you, but be wary of packing sandwiches and so on as the produce may not be allowed in the country you are travelling into, so check before you travel. If not, you can always take along packets that travel well.

To make it easier to sleep on the flight, you can always bring along a neck pillow, although you may be given a cushion and probably a blanket. Some people like to take ear plugs as well to try and combat the popping sensation as well as to block out the general noise of the plane and passengers while they asleep.

You will be given exercises to do to prevent thrombosis or other problems occurring from sitting still for so long, so make sure you do them. In addition to this, get up and move your legs around as much as possible during the flight. Go for a walk up and down the aisle, and flex your legs and arms a bit. This is very important. Seek medical advice before travelling as there may be other things you can do to lessen the risk.
