How To Create Algebra From Words

Education : Maths

Often when you are asked to solve a question you will need to write it in mathematical form.

Let's say you are told Fred has ?30 and needs ?65 to buy a Playstation. How much money does he need to buy it?

Well, you could write it like this:

30 + x = 65, with 'x' being the unknown

Now we re-arrange to get:
x = 65 - 30 = 35

So he needs ?35. Whilst this might be immediately obvious with this simple question, with harder ones it can make them much easier to solve.
