How To Cut The Cost Of Your Train Fare

Travel : Travel Tips

Train fares can sometimes be very expensive, and the ticket office wont always tell you the most obvious cheapest option you can go for. Here are some tips to reduce your fare prices.

Try split-ticketing where if you have a long journey, you may want to buy multiple tickets for destinations in the middle of that route. It may be cheaper than one ticket from your start destination to your finishing destination. Use splityourticket.co.uk to work this out.

If you're 16-25 you can buy a Young Persons railcard which will be beneficial if you're a regular traveller. It can cut the cost of your fares by up to one third. For example, a return ticket from Reading to Brighton costs around £26, but with a railcard only approx £18. There are also railcards for seniors, and family etc, so check out online and see if you're eligible for one.

If you book 12 weeks in advance it can be a lot cheaper than buying on the day. Also avoid booking fees by buying tickets at the National Express East Coast website, instead of The TrainLine.com. Use Virgin trains best fare finder and the Megatrain site to search for bargain deals on off peak fares.

Two singles may be cheaper than a return, so also look into this too.
