How To Decorate A Babies Room

DIY : Decorating

When deciding on a colour scheme then it usually depends on the sex of the child but if this is unknown then you might want to work with neutral colours like lilacs, yellows and light greens. Any pastel colours will create a calming atmosphere.

You can also make the walls a bit more exciting by using borders with teddy bear designs and so on - anything that relates to children- They can be easily removed and updated when the child outgrows them. If you are more ambitious, you could also try stencilling designs like flowers onto the walls. You can buy beginners stencilling kits in art and craft shops.

After you have decorated the walls you have to think about furniture. The cot is the most important thing of course, so make sure you select one carefully and ensure it meets all safety standards. You can buy matching linen for it too, but remember that whatever the baby sleeps in should not be filled with stuffed toys and thick blankets as they are a hazard to the baby.

It may not be appropriate to place the newborn in the cot as soon as you arrive home - babies feel more secure in a small bed so you should also consider buying a smaller cradle or crib when buying the cot.

A nightlight and a mobile are also good as you just want a dim light at night in the room. Some nightlights are designed especially for babies and are musical. If you hang a mobile above the baby's bed, it gives it a distraction when awake.

Another essential purchase is, of course, a changing table with a mattress cover and space to store related items like nappies, cream and powder. You will also need storage space for clothes. A chest of drawers will house most items but clothes like dresses and jackets may need to be hung up on a rail, so it is up to you if you want to buy a wardrobe as well, or perhaps one with rail space and some shelves and/or drawers.

Personally I think that decorating should never depend on the gender of the child, that's a dated and unoriginal practice...
