How To Defrost Your Freezer

Cleaning : Kitchen Cleaning

If you are having trouble getting into your freezer, and reaching the items in it involves an axe to get through the ice first, it is quite likely that your freezer needs defrosting! Any freezer where there is an abundance of ice isn't working properly.

The first thing you have to do is empty your freezer. This doesn't mean you have to use up or throw away all the food, just take out each item, wrap it up well in newspaper and place in a box, and put the box in the coldest place you can think of. If you have a freezer bag for shopping, then fill this as much as possible. After this, you have to unplug the freezer and wedge the door open. You might want to get some old towels and place them on the floor underneath the freezer, so as to try and mop up the water as the ice thaws.

Get a pot or bowl of very hot water and pour gently into the freezer, so as to start making the ice crack and melt away. After you have softened it, use your hands to pull the chunks of ice away - keep using the water on them until they come away easily. Remember to wear gloves when doing this though to protect your hands. Don't be tempted to use any sharp objects to hack away at the ice, as you could damage the appliance itself.

Once you have removed all the ice from the sides, and you are left with a bare compartment, give it a good clean and wipe out. You might be surprised at the dirt you find! Using a solution of baking powder and water will remove any stains and odours.

Dry the compartment, then plug back into the mains, make sure the thermostat is at the usual position, and repack the food again. It should still be frozen solid.
