Find a good range of literature so that you are exposed to different styles from different periods and different countries. Everytime you encounter a word you are not sure of, write it down in a list. Then once finished reading or at a suitable period, look up the word and write down the definition. You will probably find a few words per book that you are not sure of. Overtime you will develop a great command of the language and improve your ability to communicate what is going on in your head.
