Jobs : Job Profiles

A DJ is a very sought after job as it is considered by many to be quite a glamorous job, and as such competition is tough.

Depending on the event, a DJ will play music, announce selections, get the crowd going at a gig or event, and also provide social and news commentary and listen and chat to listeners live on air.

As such you need a nice, clear and controlled bocal tone. Good pronunciation helps and good grammar too (though these are becoming less important sadly)

You need to be able to work under pressure, remain calm if things go wrong, and be able to talk and chat with little or no preparation - hence people skills and the ability to get something out of even the most boring sounding listener is a must.

Often DJs have formal training from broadcasting courses and so on, but many learn on the job or rise through the ranks of student and local DJing before catching the eye of the right person at the right time.

There is not much growth in the sector as radio stations do not increase in numbers with all the competition from other media outlets. Also the rise and rise of podcasting and so on may make the outlet a bit more bleak.

For those happy to be a club DJ and work on a gig by gig basis, there is still high demand for good, reliable DJs who turn up on time and stick to the brief. A detailed knowledge of music and styles and a large collection can also therefore be very useful.
