How To Do Basic Algebra - I

The first thing to do with an equation is to try to simplify it. This means we collect together like terms.

Let's say we get this equation:

4y + 12 - 3 - 4 + 5 -2y

Doesn't it look complicated! But we can make it look a lot more compact and easier by collecting the like terms - the numbers on their own, and the 'y' terms, to give this:

2y + 10
