How To Drive Safely In The Rain

Hobbies : Cars And Motoring

Driving in the rain can be hazardous as the roads become slippery and when the rain is especially heavy, the visibility can often be poor. If you must make a journey in heavy rain, make sure that the visibility from your car is as clear as possible before you set off.

Check that the windscreen and other windows are clean both inside and out, and try and keep de-misting them as much as possible throughout the journey. Sometimes the automatic system is not effective enough, so have an old cloth handy that you can use for wiping away condensation.

Check that all your lights, this means brake lights and headlights, tail lights and the lights for your indicators are working properly, and turn on your headlights whenever it starts to rain.

Check the windscreen wipers too, that both back and front are functioning properly. Switch them on whenever it begins to rain too as they are one of your most crucial weapons against poor visibility.

When the roads are especially slippery, you should keep below the recommended speed limit because braking conditions will be poor and the car will take longer to stop.

Keep further back than usual from the car in front so that if you do need to brake suddenly, you have extra room.

If it is really raining heavily, postpone your journey as long as you can just to let it ease off a little. However, if you find that conditions become increasingly worse as you are driving, stop at the nearest service station or rest area off the road and wait till things improve.

It is not worth taking the risk if you are uncomfortable with the road conditions.
