How To Eat Out With Children

Food And Drink : Great Food Tips

Taking children to a restaurant can be a stressful experience when they are at the age when they find it difficult to sit still for more than 10 minutes. You spend so much time worrying about them spilling something, getting restless and annoying other diners, that it takes all the enjoyment out of your own meal. Here are a few ways of making things a bit easier for you - and them!

1. It is worthwhile taking them to a child friendly restaurant - lots of the big national chains cater for kids very well, with illustrated children's menus, supplying of crayons and pictures to colour, and also many have both indoor and outdoor play areas. This is great as it means your kids can go off and play while you finish your meal.

If you are worried about safety, try and get a table near the play area (although indoor ones are usually supervised) or by the window or on the terrace if outside. It is silly to take young children to a restaurant whose atmosphere is more suited to adults.

2. When you place your order, ask the waiter or waitress if they would be able to bring the children's food out before yours - there is no need to wait until the adults' meals are ready. This way you can cut it up and attend to them a bit before your own food comes.

3. It is important to choose the right time to take children out to dinner. Make sure they are not too tired or they will become impatient and whine a lot.

Try to avoid peak times in the evening or at lunch, make an effort to get there a little earlier as the service will hopefully be better and your child won't have to wait so long. However, don't let them come out too hungry, otherwise their general disposition will be unpleasant.

4. You might want to bring along a few colouring books or puzzle books of your own in case the restaurant doesn't supply them. This will stop your children from getting restless and running up and down, which will annoy other diners and can also get in the way of the waiting staff and cause an accident.

However, if you have tried everything to calm them down but they are still misbehaving, it might be better to go home as soon as you can, as some children of a certain age just don't have the attention span to be able to sit for long periods of time.
