Exam Technique: Plan Your Answers

Education : Exams And Revision

For many questions there are just one or two marks on offer, and of course a plan is not necessary.

However for any question that has around 15% of the total marks or similar on offer - one with many marks basically - then just write a quick plan beforehand.

This may just be a logically ordered bullet point list of the points to raise: just a quick brainstorm before you start writing so that you know what your main points are and to get them down.

Efficient writing is what is needed in exams: get your points out on paper to get the marks. Flowery prose and long waffle won't cut the mustard - get your points down as quickly and succinctly as possible for top marks.

Many examiners will be scan reading your essays for the words that get the ticks and the marks, therefore be sure to get them in.
