Exam Technique: Running Out Of Time

Education : Exams And Revision

If, despite your time management technique, it is clear that you are not going to finish, then adopt this simple technique.

Let's say there are five questions left and only ten minutes... spend two minutes on each and give a partial answer to each.

Why? Because most marks for a question are gained in the first couple of minutes where you write down the key words and ideas. The extra time gains the bonus marks and it takes more time or writing to get these.

The bottom line is that five partial answers will virtually always gain more marks than one complete answer to a single question.

Therefore spread yourself thinly if you need to. Be ultra short and almost just list down your keywords in this circumstance. Thus if you need to write about some chemical process, just get out the keywords:
x reacts with y, resulting in effervescence, an exo-thermic reaction, and a colour change from orange to blue as z is produced (or whatever).

That sentence is packed with quality: you are stating the reagents and the product of the reaction, you are describing what happens during the reaction and after the reaction. And it took one minute to write!
