Exam Technique: Time Management

Education : Exams And Revision

Another key skill that you need in exams is to manage your time well.

And this requires practice!

Whilst many just like to read through their notes you should always try to attempt a past paper in your exam preparation so you have some idea of how fast you work. If you always get finished in time then no problem, but if you are someone who could miss the deadline without seeing all the questions, then savvy time management is necessary.

Here's how to do it, without needing brilliant maths.

First total the marks for the paper, this is usually given on the front of the paper; e.g. there are 120 marks available for this paper.

Then note how much time there is for the exam. Let's say it is 2 hours. This means that there is one mark on offer for every minute of the exam.

This then gives a guide on how long to spend on each question - if the question is 2 marks then spend around 2 minutes on it, if it is for 10 marks then spend longer, around 10 minutes.

If you stick by this method then you should keep yourself on track pretty much and have no nasty surprises, like only having 5 minutes left at the end to answer to the 20 mark question!
