How To Excel On The Phone

Business : Starting Up In Business

How to perform well in a telephone interview, and try and get the job before you go to interview!

Sounds hard? What should you try and do? Here are three tips for you :

The first tip is to be confident when you are called - remember to call you they are probably already quite impressed with you from your CV, so simply provide them with the extras information that they are after. Most people are incredibly nervous when on the phone to a potential employer and make all sorts of mistakes, jumble sentences and so on. Remain calm and pleasantly confident and they will be impressed. Also smile when you are on the phone!

Secondly, always make sure you only give out your personal email address and mobile phone number on applications - you don't want to be caught off guard and called where you already work. That could cause considerable tension at work as well as being highly embarassing for you, and it is hardly conducive to you giving your best performance either.

Ask interviewers if they can call back at another time if you don't feel ready to deal with them at that moment - this way you can prepare as well and it shows you are confident and care about your application and want to do your best.

Remember to smile, speak slowly and clearly so that they can hear what you are saying, and even try standing up - you'll sound more confident and your voice will be steadier. Try it next time you are on the phone - it really works!
