How To Get An Advantage In Your Job Search

Jobs : Job Search

If you are looking for a new job, then the key is to remember that, in this game, there is no such thing as a level playing field.

Have you ever gone for a job before, known everything went well and really nailed the interview, only to get a rejection letter?

You may suspect that there was an 'inside candidate' and you may be right. Many jobs are advertised purely to go through due process but someone is already lined up for the job. It may sound unfair, but that's life.

So, what can you do to get that advantage?

The answer is simple - network. Network with anyone you can, whenever you can. You will find that after several months of networking you will automatically find out who's doing what, who's moving where, and the job opportunities ahead of time.

Sometimes you might be able to get yourself onto a short list of one - find a job that no-one else knows about, declare your interest, have a quick chat and it's yours.

The point is, that you should view networking as a necessary part of your career not just a nice-to-have. Who you know counts for more than what you know in many cases.
