How To Get Beyond The Tourist Attractions On Holiday

Travel : Travel Tips

When you go on holiday, particularly to a place which is full of other holiday makers and it is the peak months for travelling, you might find that you do not really see what the country is like beyond the special tourist traps. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't go to recommended places, but sometimes it might be worthwhile opting for a more independent holiday rather than your typical package deal.

If a break in the sun is all you are looking for, then these are fine, but if you want to actually learn about the culture and the people, then you should be a bit more independent and make your own arrangements, and your own investigations into the places that are worthwhile visiting.

Sometimes the worst time to go is the peak season, as it will be very crowded and prices may be a lot higher than at other times. If you go somewhere a couple of months later, the weather might not be so uncomfortably hot and there will be fewer people staying there, and it will probably be cheaper too.

The best way to find out what you should visit is to buy ot borrow a couple of guidebooks on the area you are going to and see what recommendations meet your budget. Check out the internet as well, as there may be sites that tell you more, and also you might come across a message board with tips and advice from people who have been there.

In fact, this is one of the best ways of getting information about a country, so if you can actually talk to people face to face who have been there, then you can find out what they liked and even the best places to stay and so on.

If you are booking through a large travel agent, then they can also advise you - but be aware this has downfalls, because they tend to receive commission from tour operators and so if they give them business, so you might end up being talked into the most expensive and most typically touristy excursions, which on this occasion you are trying to avoid.

The best way to decide all the things you want to do and places you want to visit is to make a list. Don't just choose things because they are there and you have heard of them - only visit the places that actually interest you. Then try and rank the list in order, choosing the places to go that you really want to do, and then the ones you will do if you have time.

This will stop you from feeling obliged to do everything on the list and just rushing through them and not really enjoying them properly. It is better to plan to do less than you expect, that way you will not be stressed and anything extra you get to do will be a bonus.

Remember of course that going on a regular package or self catering holiday can be a brilliant experience, especially if you are just looking to relax for a while, but if you want to do things a bit differently on one occasion, then try doing a bit of research on your own and making your own decisions about what to do.
