How To Get Rid Of Dog Fleas

Pets : Dogs

Fleas are horrible looking things in close up, and are also not good news for your pet or you. Over the years they have been responsible for trasmitting many rather nasty diseases.

Therefore ensure that fleas are not a problem for your pet and household - a clean house is the single best way to ensure this.

First off, vacuum on a regular basis, and ensure that you do a thorough job.

If your pet has fleas, use a special flea comb - which tends to have a fine tooth - to remove, and place in water.

Ensure that your pets bedding is always clean, and wash well at least weekly, ideally every couple of days if you can.

If you have real problems, consult your vet about what can be done as there are various treatments out there.

Remember that only part of the flea life cycle actually lives on the dog. A female flea can produce hundreds of eggs which shed from the pets coat as they wander around the house. If your pet has fleas, treat the animal first. Some products may be more expensive but definitely worthwhile, you want something strong that will kill off the fleas and prevent re-infestation, always use the correct dosage to ensure they have been successfully killed off as well as not overdosing and causing problems with the dog. Treat the house with a flea spray that kills fleas, their eggs and larvae and if possible carries on killing any new ones that come into the household. Pupae cannot be killed with standard flea sprays but vaccuming and washing does, ensure that once the pet is treated you follow the instructions properly and use the spray under furniture, cracks of skirting boards etc. Wash all bedding (both pet and human) to ensure that pupae are removed as well as vaccuuming around the house once the treatment has time to work. Also ensure that the dog is wormed routinely as they can pick up tapeworm through fleas. Remember prevention is easier than cure!
