As soon as the buttons become stiff or hard to press, then it is time to buy a new mouse for sure. There is no point hurting yourself pressing hard on sticking buttons - they should be easy to press. Also a mouse that drags when you move it can lead to problems with that hand over time, therefore ensure you have a good mouse mat and that you can, with ease, move the mouse. Remember you can change the speed through your computer settings if that is the issue. Remember too that there are special mouses that you can get if you have certain problems using them, and therefore you should investigate these if you think it would help.
