You should try and set a long term goal, but the thing that many people forget is to set staging points - that is short term goals that all added together help you reach your long term goal. If the overall goal is to lose some weight, then rather than just set a target weight and work to it for a year (a long time) set monthly targets to lose a few pounds here and there. Not only will this incentivise you each time you meet a target, it is much easier to stay committed when there are lots of small targets along the way for you to follow.
