| Career : Salary If you want to increase your salary significantly, then there is one simple thing that you need to do - move company! Why is this? Because in the main companies are much, much tighter with pay increases for people they already employ, but will think nothing about offering someone external a whopping salary to get them. In one large corporation I know of, for instance, everyone doing a certain job earned about £28,000 and each year if you were lucky you got a tiny increase no matter what your performance. However they then took someone external in to do that same job, and they got a whopping £50,000! You may think this an extreme example, but it is actually very common. The fact of the matter is, companies will tend to offer much more to those who come in externally for certain jobs than they would to internal staff, as they already have their expectations suitably managed. Therefore always look to go external to get a bigger leap in your pay rise; there is none of the internal politics you encounter within your own company when you ask for a pay rise, therefore switching companies is the single best way to increase your salary by far.
