| Computing : Hardware There are four key types of scanner: - flatbed These are most common, the item is scanned on a glass plate - sheetfed These work like a fax machine - slide Light is passed through the image: used for slides, as the name suggests, and may be used by photographers to store their slides digitally - drum Expensive and difficult, but the best type; you won't see one of these at home - handheld Pretty much phased out now, but popular about five - ten years, ago, you would hold the scanner and run it smoothly over the item being scanned. It was difficult to get the scan smooth. Best for home used: flat bed
