Heart disease is a killer but, fortunately, we can do something to protect ourselves from it. It does mean making changes to our life style but these changes are often moderate and the benefits are enormous.



First avoid a diet that is too fatty. You know the food I mean: chips, pies, cheese, cream cakes are some of these. Follow a healthy diet instead but include a little of the "forbidden" foods as a reward. White meat, lots of vegetables and lots of fruit are what you should be eating with brown bread, brown cereal and brown rice to fill in any empty spaces! Your cholesterol level should be reduced considerably if you follow this regime and your weight will be maintained. Remember, excess pounds can lead to strain on the heart and high blood pressure, both contributing factors to heart disease.



Exercise a little every day. This doesn`t mean visiting expensive Health Clubs; brisk walking around the park, garden or road is excellent - and costs nothing.



Watch that blood pressure. Count to ten before blowing your top; better still, don`t blow your top. Give up salt and that means "hidden" salt. Read the list of ingredients on canned and packaged foods and if you must have crisps as an occasional treat, make sure they`re the unsalted kind.



Check with your doctor whether you would be wise to take aspirin every day. It certainly is a heart-saver but it`s also a medication that discourages blood clotting in the body and so it should never be self-prescribed. As I said, check with your doctor.



Take Vitamins E and C every day, along with beta-carotene. Your local health shop owner will advise you as to the strength needed. They`re supposedly anti-ageing miracle workers too, so that`s an added benefit.
