The reason is simple: as you go around the supermarket shelves, you are sure to be tempted to 'just buy this, just buy that' and before you know it you have ended up spending much more than you intended to. If you have a list then you can stick to the items on it week in, week out and leave it at that. The occasional treat is fine but it stops the temptation to splurge out each visit to the supermarket on some tempting treats that are displayed in a nice way by the supermarket stackers!
