How Atomic Mass Is Calculated

Education : Chemistry

Atomic Mass refers to the weight of an individual atom of an element.

The atomic mass varies per element, but it is tiny compared to everyday weights, because each atom has such a negligible weight on an individual basis.

The atomic mass is influenced by the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the atom. The protons and neutrons are much heavier than the electrons.

Because the weight is so small, mass of atoms is described on a relative scale, being relative to the mass of one atom with a standard mass, and this figure is called the relative atomic mass.
