How Parents Can Help A Child Going To University

Education : University

If your child is going to university for the first time then there may be a mix of feelings. Pride they are going, tinged with sadness as you will miss them from home when they first go.

So what can you do to help them prepare and get ready for their time away?

Well, be sure to have a chat about budgetting and how to manage money. Good practices up front will ensure their money goes as far as possible before they get saddled with massive debt.

Also talk about how to manage their workload and generally share some life advice.

Be understanding and reassuring if they are nervous or express anxiety - this is perfectly natural.

It is a very good idea if you can go with them on their first day just to help them unpack and settle in. Then when you leave emphasise and recommend they go and knock on the doors around them and introduce themselves to others.

Going around in a group on your first day is the best way to meet lots of people and instantly take your mind off being away from home for the first time.
