How To Help With Children's Fears

Health And Fitness : Top Health Tips

Fears Are Normal.

Doc Says:

The bogeyman, monsters under the bed, and animal attacks, do they sound familiar.
At one time or another your child, may be beset by fears such as these.
As a parent you should know, that all these fears are normal. But how you plan on reacting to them, will decide whether or not the fears go away, stick around, or even get worse.

Children could have fears at different developing stages. Suddenly a child who has been sleeping calmly in the dark, starts begging for a night light. He says he wants to keep the monsters away.
Common fears among the younger children are those of imaginary things.
In spite of parents trying to convince children there are no ghosts, or monsters, children seem to feel otherwise. Well into school age children, have a capacity to believe there are.
Some children fear things they hear on the tube.

This is a scary world even for adults. So you can imagine how your kids feel.

Here Are Some Helpful Suggestions :

Help Children Use Their Imagination.
Children fear a live bug attacking them, or swallowing then whole, or monsters lurking in the dark. But they can beat these fears.
Have your child imagine something she?s afraid of. Maybe a dark room, or a dog. Then have her visualize herself, entering that dark room, or approaching the dog, without anything awful happening. She needs to practice a number of times, until she feels comfortable.
This can also work on older children.
They may have fears of going to a new school, or a dance, or performing in a class play. Have them practice going through the real steps.
This will give them confidence for when the real thing comes along.

Get Real.
After your child has practiced enough, have him do it in real life. But small steps.
Parents set up situations where your child, feels absolutely in complete control.
If your child is afraid of animals, then go to a pet shop. Go easy, just look in the window at first. Then proceed when he is ready.

Read All About It.
If your child is afraid of spiders, and insects for instance. Go to the library and get a book on these. Read about them to your child.

Or get a book on lightening. It will help him learn about the phenomenon of lightning.
He?ll think about it in a different way.
It?s not a ominous scary thing.

Arm Your Child With A Flashlight.
Bedtime is when these supposed, creatures of the night appear. So your child?s fears manifest themselves. A flash light, will help to make, your child less defenseless.

Deputize Teddy.
Give your child a teddy. Have him set it in a chair. He will be his protector for mommy.

Have A Plan.
If your child is afraid that the house is going to catch on fire. Go out and get an escape ladder. Show the child what to do in case of a fire. If he has a plan for escape, the fears will stop.
Or anything else he fears.
