If Skin Care Products Aren\'t Working, You May Have Hormonal Acne

Beauty : Skincare

For those of you that have tried every topical cream, spot treatment, face wash, astringent, mask, or even antibiotics... but STILL have acne... you may have hormonally influenced acne. These treatments may work for other people, but if you have hormonal acne these treatments probably won't work at all. In fact, they can make it worse by drying and irritating your delicate skin. Don't treat the wrong source!

Hormonal acne is best treated from the inside, by taking birth control or other prescriptions that will balance your hormones.

Before you start any kind of treatment, have your doctor do a simple blood test so you can rule out any serious issues. You may have a thyroid illness (like I do), which greatly effects your skin and hormones. This is a really common illness but it gets overlooked a lot because the symptoms can be "blamed" on so many other things (like "teenage acne" or "stress"). Before I knew I had the illness, I treated my acne with every kind of over-the-counter acne cream and face wash, and it got worse and worse. Now that I know it's hormonal, I just take my medicine (synthroid), wash my face with GENTLE face wash (nothing for the treatment of acne), and use lotion regularly. My face is 100% better.

There are a lot of women who suffer from hormonal acne simply from their monthly cycle taking it's toll. Birth control helps a lot of girls get their hormones straightened out (the girls who break out worse during period seem to get the most benefit). Go to a dermatologist if you have severe acne! That over-the-counter stuff is meant for people who can count their pimples on one hand.

But pleeeeease, no matter how bad your acne is, don't take Accutane!! This is a HORRIBLE medicine with horrible side effects. On a good day, you will have severely dry skin, chapped lips and maybe nose bleeds (which could last long after you're off it). But it's been linked to suicide and depression for years, it's known that there's 100% chance of birth defects if you get pregnant while taking it, and is now linked to ulcerative colitis (which my brother got after taking Accutane, and it's ruined his life). Think about it... if Accutane can PERMANENTLY get rid of acne, and permanently stop your pores from producing that oil, how else is it permanently changing your body??? It's not worth it.
