The Public Record Office site has some general retention guidelines. The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators can also help If you find you have too much paper, you could introduce scanning, with an imaging or document management system to organise your documents.

However, before throwing any paper away, you should should seek legal advice on the legal admissibility and evidential weight of information stored electronically. The British Standards Institution has published a Code of Practice DISC PD0008:1999.
