You should make sure that you manage a retention schedule for your business records, so that you keep them for the periods that law or regulators stipulate. Consult your company secretary or legal adviser to get advice on retention periods. Business Links and your Tax Office can also help.

The Public Record Office site has some general retention guidelines. The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators can also help If you find you have too much paper, you could introduce scanning, with an imaging or document management system to organise your documents.

However, before throwing any paper away, you should should seek legal advice on the legal admissibility and evidential weight of information stored electronically. The British Standards Institution has published a Code of Practice DISC PD0008:1999.
