How To Improve Your Relay Time

Sport : Athletics

The place where most relays are won and lost is not on the flat run, but on the changeovers.

Poor technique and dropping of the baton, or changes that are not smooth, can lose a race, pure and simple.

Therefore you should put in lots of time practicing change overs with the other members of your team.

What you need to do is first work out the order of the changes. Once that is sorted, next you should mark out where you need to start running, in relation to the person who is handing over to you.

That's because you need to have a running start, if you start flat then you will lose a lot of ground to other runners. Mark out where you need to start running, and agree with the person changing over to you where they will place the baton.

In other words, you need to know which hand to expect the baton in, and where about.

There is no substitutes for hard practice on this, because it all happens so quickly that one mistake can make a big difference to the outcome of the race.
