How To Know Everything About Avocadoes

Food And Drink : Starters

Unripe avocados taste horrid.

If you want to know if the avocado is ripe, press it gently, it should yield to slight pressure. Shake it close to your ear. If you can hear the pip rattling, it's ready for consumption! Yum!

If you have an avocado that is not ready, sink it in a jar of uncooked rice.

It will also ripen if you keep it in a paper bag next to a banana.

An avocado pip will grow into a handsome plant. Get three cocktail sticks, push them into the base of the pip and balance it over a glass, bottle or vase of water. The pip will first grow a root, then sprout a shoot, which will develop into an ornamental plant for your kitchen window sill.

Leave it long enough and it may grow into a tree!

Cut right round the avocado lengthwise. Twist one half away. Take a large, sharp knife, whack the blade into the pip, then twist the blade. The pip will lift out.

Fill the cavities left by the pip with vinaigrette, sprinkle with herbs and black pepper, and serve. Yum!
