Jobs : Job Profiles

The calls for lawyers is going up and up, particularly in the States with the proliferation of everybody sueing everyone for everything!

A lawyer, or attorney, will be involved in a variety of roles and the idea of being in court all the time does not ring true - you can decide never to go to court and can specialise in many detailed aspects: marriage and divorce, property law, tax law and so on.

You will need to be good at writing, speaking, analysing information and thinking logically. You will need to be able to think on your feet, have good people skills to deal with a whole range of clients, and exude a calm and confident manner.

Of course the key requisite is a very detailed knowlege of your area of law, and the ability to research and know where to go if you wish to find out more information.

You will need a degree in law or the law conversion course - you will then tend to train on the job for a few years before being appointed as a fully fledged lawyer.

There is stiff competition for jobs with the bigger firms, as so many people are now going into law as a profession.

You must be prepared to work hard and long hours, sometimes in isolation whilst researching a case; and patience is also necessary.

However, the remuneration can be first rate, and many lawyers who progress up the chain or work in a lucrative practice will end up as very rich people.
