Or the alternative is to get something with a fine point like a cocktail stick, dip it into the nail polish, and then to drag gently over the nail. For instance if you wanted to add swirls or ripples in a different colour on top of the base coat - this is too hard to do with the normal applicator. However dip in the cocktail stick then make the swirl or whirl and it is fine enough that with practice you can get some detailed art.
