How To Make Your Website More Accessible

Computing : Website Topics And Subjects

Improving accessibility of your website need not be difficult. Here are some tips:

First, get rid of the Flash. Search engines and people cannot read what the Flash says if they cannot see or do not have Flash capable browsers.

Also ensure that any javascript is not essential but only an extra to the site, for instance that you can still navigate the site with it turned off.

Also be sure that users can use the tab key to move through links on the site if they can't use the mouse for whatever reason.

Make links descriptive and ensure that users can set the font size and that it is not fixed with font tags or through your stylesheet. Ensure that colour contrasts are good.

Use a consistent set of colours so it is obvious what is a link on each page and try to have the menu present so that difficult manipulation of the mouse is not needed to access different areas of the page.

All these simple things combine to make a nice and easy to access and use website.
