How To Manage An Unreasonable Boss
Career : Career Techniques Many people have a boss that works long hours and expects you to work long hours too. This is fine for those with the same priorities but can be a source of major stress for those who value work life balance. The key question - what can you do about this? Well, if you want to work 9 - 5.30 but your boss never leaves before 6.30, then the best thing to be is UP FRONT. Explain to your boss in a one-to-one or suitable occasion, when they are not stressed, that you want to create a good impression, but that you need to leave at a certain time - perhaps to look after the kids, or because you are a tennis coach in the evening - choose a suitable reason. Explain that you will get all your work done in the normal hours. Most bosses will be amenable. If the boss starts to RESENT you for working normal hours, then either ignore it, or if they start making comments, then simply remind them politely that you are working your contracted hours. If things get harder to manage, then consider escalating further up the chain.
