One important thing not to do is to ever part with cash with an agency up front. That's because they may make a large percentage of their money from the models themselves (their clients) rather than through getting you work. The best modelling agencies won't charge you to be on their books because they are going to 'sell' you to their clients in order to get both them and you money. You should also check out any agency before you go to visit. Never go to a private address for instance and certainly don't go unaccompanied.
