How To Modify Search Settings On XP

Computing : Operating Systems

There are many options that you can change on your XP search in order to improve or at least change your searching experience.

In terms of performance, the biggest is to switch on or off the indexing service that maintains a database of files and drastically improves search performance time. To change it:
- start, search --> change preferences --> with indexing service

Under change preferences you can also configure options

For instance, by default there is a dog character that appears as your so-called search companino. You can change this, and turn the character on or off or change completely using the 'with a different character' option

YOu can also turn autocomplete off by choosing the appropriate option

You can even change the behaviour with regard the searching for files and folders, by choosing the option under that name

In summary, there are many options you can configure here, the biggest being performance related re whether you have the indexing service turned on or not. The only downside is that the database needs to be maintained, and therefore from time to time you may experience a slow down of your machine whilst this is going on!
