You probably do it yourself from time to time, and if not then you are definitely in a small minority of people. Everyone does a crossword at some stage of their life, if not regularly. And something as popular as that means that there must be a market. People don't like crosswords that are compiled by computers, and you can usually tell - they just don't feel right somehow. But who compiles all these crosswords then? It must be really hard to do so! But it isn't that hard at all! Various books will guide you through the simple tricks and techniques to make sure that you can produce a good and varied crossword, pitched at varying levels of difficulty. And that's the key - you need to do your research. If you are going to pitch certain crosswords that you produce with particular magazines or companies, make sure that they are appropriate for that market. If for a children?s comic, then it needs to be fun and simple with no complex words, whereas if for a puzzlers magazine then it can of course be larger, harder and perhaps cryptic if suitable. You can always contact the editor or staff if in any doubt - this also shows that you are taking an interest. You could even try suggesting to publications that don't currently publish a crossword that they add one - you will be surprised that if you offer to supply them to a certain deadline, you might well be taken up on your offer. Not only is it a potentially profitable sector of the market, it is also an enjoyable thing to do, and great satisfaction can be derived from creating a good crossword, and all the more so when one is being paid for the privilege!
