One Way Functions

Games : Codes And Ciphers

A one way function is one that cannot be reversed.

This contrasts with a two way or reversible function. For instance, addition is a one way function if I don't tell anyone the numbers I add. If I add 12 and 18 to get 30, then there is no way for you to get back to 30 to the numbers I added without guessing (did I add 29 and 1, or 15 and 15, or 15 and 14 and 1 and so forth).
