How To Overcome Cat Behavioural Problems

Pets : Cats

If your cat exhibits overly aggressive behaviour - for instance hissing and biting on a regular basis - then it can be awkward to live with.

You will want to nip this in the bud sooner rather than later so that it becomes a transient phase rather than ingrained behaviour which will be even harder to remove in your cat.

The first thing to ensure is that this is not due to illness. If in doubt, bring the pet to your vet to have this possibility eliminated.

If the cat gets aggressive, then the best way is to ignore and certainly not encourage it. Don't play with it.

Note that your style of play may be what's making the cat aggressive, therefore be soft and gentle, not rough in your play, and note any areas of the body that seem to put cat in a bad mood and simply avoid them.

As usual with cats, bribery can work - and associate rewards with good behaviour to encourage them.

By always acting and responding in the same way to a situation a cat will soon 'learn the rules' and behave as you want.

The most important thing to remember is that praise is just as important, if not more important, then punishing bad behaviour. If your cat does something naughty, you have to try and make him/her connect that naughty thing with something bad, I find shouting doesn't really work with them, so try spraying a tiny bit of water on them, I don't mean chucking a bucket of water over them, I just mean put your hand under the tap and then flicking your hand at your cat, if you do that every time, he wil relate it with the naughty thing he does, and he'll hopefully stop doing it. The same goes for if he does something good, give him/her a treat and he/she will relate that thing with food, and will keep doing it.
