How To Pack For University

Education : University

When you first go away to university it is difficult to know exactly what clothing you should take with you, or if it they will be "fashionable" enough - all sorts of worries may go through your head! The main thing to keep in mind is that your general day to day clothing should be pretty comfortable, as when you are walking to lectures and sitting studying, there is no point in wearing clothes that are more suited to a night out.

A decent pair of trainers always comes in handy and you can dress them up or down. You should also remember that lecture halls and libraries are always going to be chilly especially in the winter so pack warm garments.

Try and take a good supply of underwear and socks because you will go through these quicker than other clothing and you don't want to have to keep running to the laundry rooms and paying to do tiny loads! Try and make sure your stuff is machine washable and if you can get away without ironing some items then it saves even more time.

Designer labels are obviously very nice but they are a lot more time consuming to wash, and if you chuck them in the machine regardless of instructions then it's guaranteed they will not come out as they went in! If possible, buy T-shirts/sweatshirts/tops etc that are similar in colour, again for ease of doing laundry as there is less chance of a colour leaking accident!

For going out you don't need to take your whole wardrobe from home. Bring one or two at most smart pairs of shoes, a couple of tops and a skirt/pair of trousers that you like wearing out. Remember that in some clubs where the dress code isn't too strict you can even get away with jeans and a smart shirt if you are a guy or a vest or tank top if you are a girl. For very formal occasions however, you will require black tie, and if female a formal dress will come in useful.

Some people like to spend a lot of money on this attire but try not to worry if you can't afford to do this, as all high street stores do formal dresses which can look as good as the more expensive ones, and remember too that a few accessories can enhance any outfit eg a nice bag, matching jewellery and so on.

A baseball cap or hat of some kind is very useful for when it is cold or if you just haven't had time to wash your hair before a 9.00 lecture!
